Surgery has a reputation problem. Most people imagine something dramatic a long operation, weeks in bed, a big scar. And for some surgeries, that used to be accurate. But the field has changed enormously over the last two decades, and many operations that once required a week in hospital can now be done in a day, through cuts smaller than a fingerprint, with patients back to their routines within days.
At Kalyan Hospital, Gwalior, general surgery is one of our core strengths. Here’s a look at the most common conditions we treat and what the experience actually involves.
Hernias
A hernia happens when something inside the body usually part of the intestine pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle. You’ll often notice it as a bulge in the groin or abdomen, sometimes with an ache, particularly when lifting, coughing, or straining.
Hernias don’t fix themselves. Left alone, they tend to grow, and occasionally the protruding tissue gets trapped which is an emergency. The good news is that laparoscopic hernia repair is now a routine procedure. Small cuts, a mesh placed to reinforce the weakness, and most patients are up and walking the same day. Recovery is quick and the recurrence rate is low.
Appendix problems
Appendicitis inflammation of the appendix often starts as vague pain around the belly button that moves to the lower right side over several hours. Fever, nausea, and loss of appetite usually accompany it. It tends to come on over 12 to 24 hours.
The treatment is removal, and it needs to happen before the appendix perforates. Laparoscopic appendicectomy at Kalyan Hospital is a short operation and most patients are discharged within 24 to 48 hours, fully recovered within a week or two.
What makes laparoscopic surgery different?
Traditional open surgery involves a single large incision sometimes 10 to 15 cm long. Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery uses 2 to 4 tiny cuts, through which a camera and slender instruments are passed. The surgeon operates while watching a high-definition screen.
The outcome for patients is meaningfully different: less pain after surgery, lower risk of wound infection, smaller scars, shorter hospital stay, and faster return to normal life. At Kalyan Hospital Gwalior, this is how we do most routine abdominal surgeries.
Before your surgery: what to expect
For any planned operation, you’ll have a pre-operative consultation. We’ll review your health history, check your current medications, and order any pre-op tests needed. The procedure will be explained to you clearly what happens, how long it takes, what to expect in recovery. No question is too small to ask.
You’ll be asked to fast beforehand (usually nothing to eat for 6 to 8 hours, nothing to drink for about 4 hours before the operation). Bring someone with you on the day even for day surgeries, you’ll need a person to take you home.
Recovery realistic expectations
For most laparoscopic procedures, you’ll be back to light activity within 3 to 5 days. Heavy lifting, intense exercise, and physically demanding work usually needs to wait 2 to 4 weeks. We schedule a follow-up appointment to check your healing and answer any questions that come up at home.
If you’ve been told you need surgery or if you’ve been ignoring a symptom hoping it’ll go away come in. A straightforward conversation with our surgical team at Kalyan Hospital, Gwalior will tell you exactly where you stand.
