Understanding IVF Failure: Why Cycles Fail at Kalyan IVF Centre, Gwalior

This is almost always the first question. And the frustrating truth is that sometimes there isn’t one clean answer. The most common reasons are poor embryo quality (often due to chromosomal issues that are impossible to detect without genetic testing), the uterus not accepting the embryo even when it looks healthy, or factors in the sperm that a basic semen analysis doesn’t catch  like DNA fragmentation.

We go back through everything. The stimulation, the embryo development, the uterine lining at the time of transfer, the timing. We ask: was there anything we could have done differently? Is there a test we should run now that we didn’t before?

Some investigations that often reveal useful information include ERA (Endometrial Receptivity Analysis)  which checks if the transfer was done at the optimal time, sperm DNA fragmentation testing, genetic testing of embryos before transfer (PGT-A), and uterine checks for any anatomical issues. Not all of these are needed in every case. But they help build a sharper plan.

How soon can you try again?

Physically, most women can begin a new cycle after their next period  around 4 to 6 weeks after a failed transfer. Emotionally, that timeline is yours to decide. We’ve had couples come back a month later; we’ve had couples take a year. Both are completely fine.

What’s not fine is going into the next cycle without a proper review. If your clinic’s answer to a failed cycle is ‘let’s just try the same thing again,’ that should give you pause.

Should you consider changing clinics?

Only you can answer that. If you felt well cared for, if your questions were answered, if your team was thorough  there may be no reason to move. But if you felt like a number, if no one explained why the cycle failed, or if you’re just not sure  a second opinion is always a sensible move. If three or four cycles haven’t worked, the conversation changes. At that point, it may be worth talking about donor eggs, which use a younger donor’s eggs and dramatically improve success rates.
